One57

A Short Story About One57

In 2015, One57 delivered on the developer's promise of becoming, at the time, the most expensive and the most exclusive condo apartment address in New York City. One57 began the sequence that resulted in this stretch of 57th Street becoming known as "Billionaires' Row."

Extell, the developer, created a superb selection of exclusive homes where the view from each takes center stage. To the north, residents and guests see Central Park, to the south they get to gaze at the hyperactive life that is Midtown Manhattan, each with huge windows to provide an eagle's eye view of Carnegie Hall, and the Hudson and East Rivers away in the distance.

Extell's name is derived from "Excellence" and "Intelligence," and these two principles drove everything the One57 team did. They achieved something no other condo tower had achieved until then. The project was envisioned by Pritzker Award-winning French architect Atelier Christian de Portzamparc, and its interior design was created by Thomas Juul-Hansen.

To quote Extell's VP of Design, "We set out to create a residential experience unlike anything else in New York City, collaborating with craftsmen of impeccable taste and discernment. Our selective process ensured that every residence at One57 is among the best ever designed."

The architecture

The sleek, 1000-foot high tower's façade of vertical lines incorporating alternate dark and light mirrors modify the shading as the sun rises, passes, and sets thus delivering dynamic reflections of the street below.

Every residence is among the best that have ever been designed. They feature expansive living spaces and custom detailing aimed at both intelligence in the use of those spaces and excellence in their essential design, so every home is opulent, discrete, gracious, and meticulously finished.

The ground floor has the residents' private entrance lobby, concierge office, and mail room. The 2nd floor is home to the Onyx Room, conference room, function rooms, and the catering kitchen, as well as the Park Hyatt lounge.

The 3rd to the 30th floors are anchored by the world-renowned Park Hyatt Hotel, whose hand-selected team of professionals provide condo residents with every service they may require.

The residences are of three primary designs, the "One Collection," the "Signature Collection," and the two penthouses which are known as the "Spring Garden" and the "Winter Garden." The penthouses both enjoy their own exclusive outdoor areas. All are witness to scrupulous attention to detail in every aspect of their construction and finish.

The One Collection residences occupy floors 32 to 38, and the Signature Collection homes are on floors 38 to 90.

The Residences

The One Collection homes are a turnkey collection of 38 apartments which range from one to four bedrooms. Each is complete, fully furnished, and equipped and appointed with every utensil, towel and piece of linen an owner would expect. The living areas are open and spacious and make the most of the natural light to make the most of the views.

The Signature Collection apartments redefine luxury with the offer of larger residences from three to five-bedroom homes.

The two penthouses, the Spring Garden and Winter Garden, are truly spectacular. The first thing that demands attention is the entrance to each home. It was in the early part of the last century when architects created the entrance hall, or gallery, to act as a circulation hub for hosts to greet and say goodbye to their guests, to display their artwork and other collections, and to set the tone for the residence. The foyers in these penthouse suites truly do justice to their owners' demands for making an elegant or romantic first impression.

Each penthouse residence spans two floors and, as well as the beautiful living and dining areas, has five bedrooms. The solariums, encompassing almost 700 square feet (65 square meters) are off the living room, adding to the grandeur and feeling of openness.

The penthouses' lower level has a large bedroom, a powder room, the kitchen is off the great room, has a large center-island with integrated stools. A delightful wooden staircase leads to the upper floor where the other four bedrooms are located, including the magnificent master bedroom suite. All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms.

The Finishes

As one would expect, each residence has the finest of natural finishes. The bedrooms are a haven of peacefulness. The beds in the One Collection homes are by Dux, and the linens are by Sferra. All the bathrooms are Italian marble with radiant-heated floors and have fittings by Waterworks and Dornbracht.

The kitchens are fitted with cabinetry by Smallbone of Devizes. This company began its business in the ancient county of Wiltshire in England meticulously renovating antique furniture. It then transferred its craftsmen's traditional skills to constructing the world's best custom cabinetry. The kitchens all have integrated, technologically-advanced Miele and Subzero appliances, and the Dornbracht brand name continues through from the bathrooms for the faucets.

The Amenities

The Park Hyatt Hotel set the standards for the amenities available to the condo residents. The hotel was ranked #1 in New York city by US News and World Report. The building's 31st floor contains the residents' library, designed by Thomas Juul-Hansen, and includes a billiard table and large aquarium. The floor also has the screening and performance room designed to have perfect acoustics to make the most of its Steinway grand piano. There is also a fitness center, conference room, and private dining room. The fitness center offers personal training and has a yoga studio.

The 25th floor is home to the hotel guests' amenities. The swimming pool, sauna, and steam rooms on this floor are available to the condo owners. Swimmers get to enjoy not only their sport but are treated to underwater music by Carnegie Hall composers.

Spa Nalai

Spa Nalai is also on the 25th floor and is also available to owners and guests. It offers the finest services available to encourage and enable wellness, relaxation, and good health. It has a unique sand quartz treatment bed as well as a superb couples' spa.

On the 3rd floor, residents and guests will find the Living Room Restaurant and Lounge, and the Bevy Restaurant. The Living Room is a modern "grand salon" offering perfectly crafted cocktails in the champagne bar.

Concierge Services

The hotel's concierge services, provided by Luxury Attaché, are available at a moment's notice to all residents. In-home catering, pantry-stocking, turn-down service, etc. are only a phone call away.

The Neighborhood

One57 is at the center of Manhattan. Here, Central Park meets The Plaza District. Culture, commerce, fine dining, and high-end shopping combine to create the energy, excitement, creativity, and intellectual expression that is New York.

The Empire State Building, the Museum of Modern Art, Madison Square Garden, and the New York Public Library are a stone's throw from the iconic One57. The Booth theater with its Venetian-Renaissance frontage offers drama and comedy in an intimate setting, The Al Hirschfeld Theater along with other Broadway and off-Broadway theaters tell the world that every great performance can be easily found by local residents.

There are many restaurants, but here are just two; the 21 Club provides classic American fare in a setting that can only be described as an exploration into the imagination. Bouloud Sud delights its dimmer guests with incredible Mediterranean cuisine.

Shoppers are spoiled for choice. There is, of course, the iconic Tiffany and Co. then Ascot Chang for bespoke gentlemen's apparel, and Alexander McQueen for the lady of the house. The list of stores is almost endless.

Why We Recommend One57

To paraphrase Extell's VP of design, anyone who wants a residential experience like no other should consider One57. Many UHNWI's need a convenient, exclusive, full-service, and immediately ready-to-occupy pied-à-terre. That is what One57 provides. Others want a larger home which they furnish in a way that "speaks to all" of its owner. That is also what One57 offers. And everyone who wants perfect amenities supported by the most professional concierge team in the world knows that Park Hyatt's team will deliver every time.

The proof of his intention is echoed in every new record the property has set for luxury living and luxury's price tag. The 96 stories incorporate half-floor and full-floor homes ranging from 3,575 square feet (332.1 square meters) to the 8,255 square feet (766.91 square meters) penthouses which occupy floors 91 to 96.
